Baby info, lucky you!

I’m sure most of you aren’t on the edge of your seats waiting for an update on our pregnancy. To you I summarize, “The bun’s in the oven, still cookin’, and everything’s ok.”

For the rest of you or to those who have to read the entire post once they've started, here’s a little more baby related info.

Betsy will be starting her ninth month of pregnancy next week. It’s amazing how quickly these things go by. She had her last biweekly appointment yesterday, and will go once per week for the rest of her labor. They checked her out and everything is going well. Her cervix is fifty percent effaced and 1 cm dilated. Effaced refers to the thinning the wall of the cervix, which is necessary for labor (though I’m sure most of you who care about this already know what it means). So far, her tests have been good for protein, sugar, and a whole host of other issues. Also, the baby is head down and very low. I don’t have much else to report medically as there really aren’t any problems, which we are grateful for.

In preparation for our new little bundle of joy, we have wrapped up most of the essential baby projects. We finished the baby room, which was our largest project. We’ve washed all of the clothes/linens and put them away, we put baby supplies on the shelves, and the room is decorated quite nicely (in my opinion). I’m sure we will run into situations where we have to run out and pick up one thing or another, but we’ve bought or received most of everything we figured we’d need. Also, we’ve worked through our finances and planned our time off. Kirsten, Betsy’s sister, is planning on coming to help after the birth, too, which is very generous and we appreciate it very much. I’ll be taking 2 weeks off and Betsy will be taking 6 weeks off.

Last, but not least, we’ve pick out 2/3 of his name (we don’t have a middle name yet). James Gravley. Middle name suggestions are welcome. We liked James for many reasons, but mostly because Betsy loves James Harriet stories. We’ll call him James or Jamesy as kid. If it’s a girl, we not sure what we’ll do for a name. I suppose we had better get on that, eh?

  • I'll try to sell that, but it's been vetoed in the past...

  • James Jon Gravley... I like that one. "Jimmy Jon!!!" Ok, I see your point...

    James Paul Gravley? (JP?)
James Bond Gravley? (That's just so perfect!)
James Tiberius Kirk Gravley? (Ok, that's cruel, sorry)
    James Matteo Gravley? (Ok, weird..)
James Dorian Gravley? (I like this one)
James Maverick Gravley? (Talk to me Goose!)

All the above are quite nice, but you could just check out this site: www.namenerds.com

Be sure to check out their middle names section. (Boys names are on the bottom, bit its an interesting read).

And don't let the name fool you, it has quite a lot of useful features. And you know with Uncle Jon around your child will have much geeky influence, might as well go with it. =)

  • Now, don't say "no" right away. Let it sit with you for a while... James loquacious Gravley. Think about it.

I actually broke out the video camera after Erin's water broke and she was making her call to the hospital. I watched it recently and it brought back the paralysing fear that I experienced. All the hospital time leading up to the actual birthin' was surreal. Especially the part where the nurses decided that they were going to induce her around 7:00 am and we were told to get some sleep. I was laying in a convert-o-chair with my iPod staring out the window replaying all those terrorfying videos we had to watch in the birthin' classes. You probably know the ones I'm talking about. Where they show respectible, well-dressed women one minute- then cut to them completely naked, moaning like a wounded boar while slumped over a support bar with ice cubes dribbling from their lips.

But, I'd pay money to go through that again. One tip. If there's any inclination on your wife's part to get the shiv in the spine to take away the pain, tell the nurse immeadiatly. Erin tried to tough it out and do it naturally. But when she decided to go with the epidermal, she had to wait 40 min. You start to run out of encouraging things to tell her after that long.

  • Aaron,
How about James Alladin Gravley? He could show you the world.

    Jon,
I'm counting on that geeky influence from you and all my techy friends. I hope to breed an army of h4xors with with to take over the world.

    Pat,
I remember the videos, and your description is spot on. I'd like to say it's exaggerated, but it's not. I still learned a lot from them, and as graphic as they were, I actually thought they would be worse. Lol, that whole bar/ice dribbling imagery makes laugh.

As far as pain management goes, from the start we've been very commited to the epidural. But after taking our baby class, we're not sure anymore. We better wrap that one up pretty soon, too.

  • Have you discussed this "breeding an army" with Betsy? I think she might have issues with it.=)

  • Nana G., here once again. You'd better think about girl names too. Hehe~ They say carrying low may be a sign for a little bundle of "sugar and spice" and I for one couldn't be more tickled if that were the case!!!!! We just got back from Disney and all of the perfect little "Princesses" walking around almost made me want to start all over again. Close,... but NOT REALLY!!! :P

How about Jan if it's a girl, from her other Granny and maybe Kiersten for a middle name?

And if it's a boy, how about Michael, or Daniel, or Oliver, or Noah or Stephen? Would you call him Jimmy? Jim Brandt would be elated!!! Hehe! He could be "little Jimmy". LOL! James is a very strong and wonderful name for a man of any age.

Soooo glad to hear that all is well, and can't wait to see you both tomorrow!

    Love~
    Mom
